Amusingly, it took 4 days for me to break the sensible run and try and play random stuff throughout the list of songs I like but probably too difficult for me. And they pretty much were!
I started off with Sweet Mountain River because my guitar was already tuned to D standard (the only other D standard song in the game is Mastadon, and I don’t think I’ll touch that for a long time!). I had a quick run through on learn a song and then went straight into score attack. Managed to up my score for that to over 200,000 which is pleasing. I still have a few timing issues with the song – I seem to play where I expect the note to be and not where it is, so there’s a couple of off-timing bits that I need to work on. Most annoying for me is that I’m often making mistakes during the intro, which is really straightforward! Basically because I’m not looking and assuming I know where the notes are coming in. One of the things I hope to achieve is to become more familiar with the fretboard and where the notes and strings are.
After a few runs through, I changed song. I thought I’d give Everlong a go, as it’s a favourite song of mine and the intro was one of the things I’d done with my guitar teacher in a lesson, so I vaguely remembered how it went. Obviously, playing it in this setting would be different as I would be starting from the easiest setting and working up. But it just confused me. The intro was much different to how I remember, and the notes I was playing during the verse seemed overly loud and, well, just wrong. I’ve listened to this song god knows how many times and I don’t remember it sounding like that. I suppose as I level up it will fit in better. But I muddled through. It was too difficult.
Ramping back, I tried Paint It Black. Well ok, it wasn’t as hard as Everlong had been, but it was still a little advanced from where I should be, and I got a bit disheartened again.
This is an issue I want to try and iron out – make myself follow a better pattern of learning so that I don’t end up doing things too hard and give up.
Going back to the list of songs, I tried the top recommended song; Blitzkreig Bop by the Ramones. Which was actually a laugh although things escalated quickly! Started off nice and simple, and then halfway through my first playthrough the power chords arrived. I slightly misinterpreted the strum marks with the chords while playing Everlong, but realised during this song what they were and went for it. Not a bad start and over 50% mastery. Went for it a second time and killed my wrist! But actually, I quite like power chords.
My session finished on a bit of a downer as I went back to RU Mine? I’d obviously just tipped over to a level of mastery, but this one suddenly included palm mutes, hammer-ons and power chords that I really hadn’t expected. So getting to the end having missed far too many notes and making it sound like a dirge whereas before it had sounded ok, I was a bit sad. But at least I know what I’m going to work on for my next session.
